Mittens that are knitted flat in one piece – a bit magical. No double pointed needles or tapestry needles are needed for assembly. You have one end of yarn at the start and one at the end, and otherwise it's just knit stitches and a fun construction!
Construction
Knit back and forth from cuff to tip. Thumb is constructed along the way. Watch video here. More instructional videos available.

Yarn
You can use whatever scraps you have. Either two strands of fingering yarn (about 180–200 yards per 50 g) or a single worsted one. Mixing a fuzzy yarn with a more traditional yarn adds warmth and extra depth. The fuzzy yarn also helps fill out the ridges.
I have used:

Pickles Soft Fuzz

Yarn Calculation for scrap yarn
The calculation applies if you knit with the specified gauge (18/38). One mitten weighs approximately 22 (32) 38 (48) g. Double for two.
Estimated yardage: 42 (60.5) 72 (91) m | 45.9 (66.2) 78.7 (99.5) yds, either as 2x the yardage in thin yarns or 1x the yardage in a thicker yarn.
Convert to another yarn like this:
g on the ball (i.e. 50 g) divided by
yds on the ball (i.e. 170 yds)
= Yds per g
2. Calculate how many grams you need:
Choose your size: 42 (60.5) 72 (91) m | 45.9 (66.2) 78.7 (99.5) yds
divided by
yds per g (answer given above)
= Grams needed for your size
